Practicing Preventative Hygiene at Home
Good oral health starts at home, and many mouth-healthy habits can actually improve your overall health, as well. Avoid smoking, which can double your risk for serious gum disease and slow or prevent healing. Limit or restrict sugary or sticky foods, because these can lead to tooth decay. Eat a balanced diet to ensure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals necessary for strong, healthy teeth, and practice proper at-home oral hygiene.
To care for your oral health at home, be sure to follow these hygiene guidelines:
- Brush teeth twice a day with a soft nylon-bristled brush, replacing the brush every three to four months.
- Floss each night after brushing to remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and at the gumline.
- Clean your tongue by brushing or scraping tongue from back to front to remove odor-causing bacteria.

Caring for Oral Health in the Dental Office
At-home hygiene is essential to good oral health, but regular visits to the dentist can help you do more than you can do alone. For instance, our dentists recommend that children get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the molars come in. These thin coatings fill in the natural pits and grooves on the molars to seal them, preventing food, germs, and other debris from getting stuck and causing cavities and decay. Combined with twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, a healthy diet, and routine dental cleanings, sealants offer excellent periodontal disease prevention. Sealants generally last 5-10 years, at which time a dentist can reseal the molar for continued protection.
Fluoride treatment is another important preventative measure offered at our West Los Angeles dentists’ office. Most public drinking water is supplemented with the mineral fluoride, because of its known abilities to strengthen bones and tooth enamel, ward off cavities, and even repair damage caused by decay. Many toothpastes, mouthwashes or rinses, and some beverages contain fluoride for the same reason. A concentrated fluoride treatment is standard at dental appointments until age 18 but may be beneficial to adults, as well. Our dentists are happy to discuss preventative treatment options with you during your exam.
